Weleda is a global company specializing in certified natural cosmetics and anthroposophic medicines. Founded in 1921, our approach brings together health, beauty, nature and a holistic understanding of people. More than a century later, our roots, purpose and values continue to guide how we develop products, make decisions and work with people and nature.
A vision that began in 1921
Weleda was founded by people exploring new approaches to medicine, health and personal care. The physician Ita Wegman, the philosopher and natural scientist Rudolf Steiner and the chemist Oskar Schmiedel were among the figures who shaped this early vision, inspired by anthroposophy and by the relationship between people and nature.
In 1921, production of medicines and personal care products began in Arlesheim, Switzerland, and in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. In the years that followed, medicinal plants were also cultivated in Schwäbisch Gmünd. These beginnings continue to shape Weleda's understanding of health, beauty and nature today.
Health and beauty in harmony with people and nature
Our purpose expresses why Weleda exists. It connects our economic activity with a holistic understanding of health, nature and social responsibility. It provides a common orientation for our people worldwide and encourages us to think long term, use resources responsibly and consider economic, social and environmental perspectives when making decisions.
Principles that guide how we act
Our values turn our purpose into everyday principles. They include enthusiasm for the power of nature, holistic thinking, responsibility, trust through transparency, economic sustainability and openness to new ideas. Together, they shape how we work with employees, partners, customers and society — and how we continue to develop as a company.
Global presence, shared principles
From its origins in Switzerland and Germany, Weleda is a Swiss public limited company headquartered in Arlesheim, Switzerland. Its largest branch is located in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. Today, Weleda natural cosmetics and medicines are available in more than 50 countries, with Weleda companies operating in 23 countries. Across markets, a shared understanding of nature, health, quality and responsibility connects the Weleda brand.
Weleda Between 1933 and 1945
Our history also encompasses the period between 1933 and 1945. In a detailed presentation, we shed light on the circumstances in which Weleda operated during that time and on how the company's leadership acted throughout this period..
Our history explains where Weleda comes from. Our purpose and values define where we are going.
The name Weleda refers to Veleda, a name historically associated with wise women known for their knowledge of healing. For Weleda, the name reflects the long-standing connection between people, nature and health.
Anthroposophy is one of the historical and philosophical foundations of Weleda. It explores the relationship between human beings and nature and has influenced Weleda’s understanding of health, medicines, personal care and the way the company sees its role in society.
At Weleda, a holistic approach means looking at people, nature and health as interconnected rather than in isolation. This perspective also influences how the company considers economic, social and environmental aspects when making decisions.
Natural cosmetics and medicines have both been part of Weleda since its beginnings. In 1921, the company began developing medicines and personal care products inspired by a broader vision of health, beauty and the relationship between people and nature.
Medicinal plants have been part of Weleda’s work since its early years. The first Weleda medicinal plant garden was established in 1922, and the company continues to cultivate medicinal plants in its own gardens and work with plant-based raw materials today.
